Week 4 Response

Academic sources to me are: libraries, books, encyclopedias, and even faculty on campus. By only using academic sources a student can be sure that their paper has accurate information to use throughout the paper.

Week 3 Blog Response

The field that I have chosen to study is the Students for Life organization. I think some of the students of campus would say that my site is very controversial, a very opinionated topic, and black and white. I don't know the exact people that participate with this organization, but I would guess that people that are opinionated, care about unborn children, and really want to educate people on campus or just people in general about the quality of life, would be belong to this organization.

To Disagree or Agree

I feel that my results fit me to an extinct and I am more in the middle of all the categories but for the most part I do agree with the results. I like to keep things scheduled and planned but more times than not it doesn't always go as planned and as for being extroverted I do like to go out with my friends on the weekends or during the week, but I also like to be alone and have my space.

Week 2 Blog Reponse

A few factors that I'm considering when I look at Students for Life are: their side of abortion, what ways they help society, the people involved in the group, what the organization is about, how long they have been an organization on campus, and what events or activities do they sponsor and/or hold. I think that all the factors are important when you look at this type of subculture because not everything is clear cut and simple and being an outsider looking in with a different perspective you have to be open and objective. I’m looking forward to learning more about abortion and the various ways to sustain life around campus, in our different societies, and on the planet.

In any subculture that I choose to explore my race and gender would be the two biggest factors. The subculture that I'm choosing to explore is Students for Life, an organization that is compiled of students that discuss the right to life and sustaining the human race. Being that I am an African-American female at my age it would not be uncommon for someone to look at me and think that I come from a low class family and don't have many values. And with this subculture it could be easy for the participants in this group to judge all African-American females about how we choose to deal with or handle pregnancy among our race and age group, but being who I am I know that I was not raised to think that way or to judge others based on race, age, gender, or any other unchangeable factors. So I think that I could still take an objective look into Students for Life, with out having too many assumptions.

Box 2

Every six weeks I go have my hair permed by my beautician and she styles it depending on what style I want. Usually I go every two weeks to get my hair touched up which includes a wash and style. A few of the styles include: a ponytail, a French roll, spiral curls, straight down, or any other elaborate design that I can think of. At night I go through many different steps to insure that my hair stays in good condition; one step that is a constant is when I tie my hair up with a silk scarf or wrap my hair around my head and then put a wave cap or scarf on my head to keep my hair in place. There are times when I do not go to my beautician to have my hair styled therefore I get my hair braided in one of three styles that I prefer: micro minis, single braids, or cornrows. The ritual of putting my hair up at night is similar to after I've had it put into one of my many styles. Although my braids tend to stay in longer than the styles and I can wear my hair like such for up to a couple of months.

The BSA is an organization where any student can have the chance to learn about the African-American culture, beliefs, and meet new people. Throughout the year BSA has shown support and interest in major incidents around the country. Not only does this organization sponsor various activities around campus, but it also supports the other various multicultural organizations on campus when spreading the word about diversity and learning to accept others cultures with a different perspective. The Jena Six, Black Issues Conference, the upcoming Black History Expo, and events during Homecoming are just a few of the important topics covered by the Black Student Association.
